Description

This nicely carved bear with inlaid turquoise eyes and a shell bundle measures 1 1/4" long by 7/8" tall by 3/8" wide. The material used is banded malachite. Zuni Bear fetish represents strength, healing and self-knowledge. Not hallmarked but purchased and stored with carvers name.

The most renowned fetish carvers are the Zuni, who call themselves Asiwi (Ah-she-wee). Traditionally, Zuni fetishes are small carvings made from various materials by the Zuni Indians. These carvings serve a ceremonial purpose for their creators and depict animals and icons integral to their culture. As a form of contemporary Native American art, they are sold with non-religious intentions to collectors worldwide.
