Description

Paul Saufkie (1904–1993) is considered the creator and main teacher in the development of Hopi overlay jewelry. He learned silversmithing from his father in the 1920’s, and after World War II taught returning veterans in a program sponsored by the G. I. Bill of Rights. Mr. Saufkie and renowned painter Fred Kabotie helped create the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild in 1949, which offered training, materials, financing, workspace and marketing for Hopi silversmiths. Saufkie's influence helped give Hopi jewelry a distinct identity. His jewelry is hard to come by as he did not produce many pieces after the 1950's.

This wonderful bracelet is simple elegance, with a beautiful satin finish and a wonderful water wave design. The Hopi believe that being in harmony with nature is vital to life itself and that the aquifers breathe in rain and snow and breathe it out.

It measures 3/4" wide. Inside measures 5 1/2" with a 1" opening. Slightly adjustable. Hallmarked with his Snow Cloud and the Hopi Silver Craft Guild mark.
