Among the most renowned Zuni fetish carvers is Teddy Weahkee, c:1890 - 1965. This pair of Zuni figures carved by Teddy, features shells and Blue Gem turquoise bundle belt wrapped over leather cord. Teddys figures are distinctive with the flattened face, pursed lips, bump nose, narrow eyes and hair knot at the back of the head. These figures measure male, 5 7/8" tall and 1 7/8" wide and female, 4 1/2" tall and 1 5/8" wide. The material used is deer antler. His figures are rare and are highly collectable. Both figures are in excellent condition.
A veteran of World War
I, Weahkee attended school in Phoenix; and, upon returning to Zuni,
he participated in the archaeological dig at Hawikuh (1917-1923)
where he gained firsthand knowledge of ancient Zuni art forms. Weahkee became well-known for a style of fetish carving that closely
resembles historic Zuni forms. He was also a master jeweler and worked for trader C.G. Wallace for many years.
