Description

Among the most renowned Zuni fetish carvers is Teddy Weahkee, c:1890 - 1965. This wonderful turquoise Zuni figure carved by Teddy offers the distinctive features of the flattened face, pursed lips, bump nose, narrow eyes and hair knot at the back of the head. This figure measure 4 1/8" tall and a 2" wide body. The figure was originally glued to this turquoise base, of the same material used in the carving. The base measures 3 1/4" wide by 2" deep by 1/2" thick. The material used is natural turquoise with a weight of 247 grams. His figures are rare and are highly collectable. This figure is in excellent condition.

A veteran of World War I, Weahkee attended school in Phoenix; and, upon returning to Zuni, he participated in the archaeological dig at Hawikuh (1917-1923) where he gained firsthand knowledge of ancient Zuni art forms.
Weahkee became well-known for a style of fetish carving that closely resembles historic Zuni forms. He was also a master jeweler and worked for trader C.G. Wallace for many years.
