The
Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo is located 25 miles southwest of Santa Fe, New
Mexico. This style of beadwork is thought to be the oldest form of jewelry from
New Mexico and is still practiced today mostly among Native Americans of the
Santo Domingo (Kewa) and San Felipe Pueblos. Known best for their hand rolled
heishi beads, some of the finest turquoise necklaces are made by Santo
Domingo artists. Other traditional forms of Kewa jewelry include mosaic inlay
designs on shells and depression era necklaces. Many of these necklaces were acquired directly from the artists for our business in the 1950's-60's.
